Frances Hertzog and Jo Millington analysed the latest scientific understanding of DNA transfer in their seminar hosted by Libertas Chambers in December.
They discussed how knowledge of indirect DNA transfer mechanisms translates into the opinions of forensic experts. They focused on cases where DNA matching an individual is recovered from moveable items and where there is little or no other supporting evidence.
Considering a number of notable cases they highlighted the impact of the limitations of scientific understanding of DNA transfer on the preparation of cases from advice at the police station through to trial.
